CRT monitors can last a long time if taken care of properly. A LCD monitor may run under the expected lifespan as the monitor uses the backlight bulb to illuminate the screen. These bulbs may run as high as getting a brand new monitor. Depending on the service facility, you might get lucky to find a cheap replacement bulb.
In the end, LCD monitors are the winner. If a CRT monitor can be found, there is still a lot of nostalgia to be found for first generation computers to go out of their way to own. But for the sake of economy and appeal, a LCD monitor is the way to go.
