Windows Emoticons ‘ Why It Makes Sense To Use Them.
When you are having a personal conversation with somebody else, it involves much more than just an exchange of words. Your body language also plays a part in getting your message across. If you smile while talking it tells something else than when you frown. When you turn your back on the other person it tells him or her very clearly how you feel. Windows emoticons were developed to fulfill much the same purpose during online conversations.
An emoticon is simply an icon which you add to your conversation to convey a feeling or facial expression which would otherwise have gone unnoticed. With emoticons you can show the other person that you are smiling ‘ or frowning. You can shed a silent tear or roar with laughter. You can give an idea a thumbs up….. Or a thumbs down.
While you are chatting to someone you love, merely typing ‘I love you’ simply doesn’t say it as well as a little red heart icon. And when you break up what will better convey your feelings than a little broken heart?
Some of the more common emoticons originated in days before our current instant messaging programs. Smileys are emoticons which you create by typing a keyboard symbol or punctuation mark. A simple example is to use 
for a smile and 
for a frown. Most modern instant messaging programs will automatically convert that to the relevant icon.
On top of using emoticons, another option is to use message shorthand to get across your point with less typing. By using ASAP for ‘as soon as possible’, you save yourself quite a lot of typing. And the abbreviation a/s/l has become quite common during first online encounters ‘ it stands for a question: ‘what is your age, sex and location?’
Emoticons add life to a medium that could otherwise have been dull and lifeless. They have become an important part of the way we communicate online. And like their ancient predecessors, the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt, they prove that sometimes a picture does indeed say a thousand words.
