Shopping For An Electric Guitar Amplifier? Consider These Three Types
There are more great electric guitar amplifiers on the market than ever before. So how do you know which guitar amplifier is right for you? To determine that, you need to decide what type of music you’re going to play.
There is an amplifier that’s just right for any type of music you want to play. If you’re playing Jazz, Country, Heavy Metal or good old Rock-N-Roll there’s an amplifier that will be perfect for that music. After you have determined what type of music you want to play you can choose from three primary styles of amplifier construction.
Currently there are 3 main types of guitar amplifier on the market. There is the classic and eternally popular tube amplifier. There is the rugged and reliable solid-state amplifier which has no tubes. The latest and greatest amplifiers are digital modeling amplifiers which can sound like many different amplifiers.
The tube amplifier is the first type of amplifier used with the electric guitar. Tube amps are very warm sounding and give your guitar a compressed, tight feel. Tube amps work best in music that needs some light distortion such as Blues or Rock-N-Roll. Tube amps do require more maintenance than the other amplifier types.
Solid State amplifiers do not use any tubes and have a reputation for being a very clean and clear amplifier. They are also very rugged and don’t require as much maintenance as a tube amp. Although solid state amplifiers have excellent clean tones they’re also perfect for modern heavy metal tones. Solid State amps do well in both Country music and Heavy Metal.
Digital modeling amplifiers are built to sound like many different types of tube and solid-state amplifiers. You can switch from a classic Fender Bassman to a modern Marshall Stack sound at the press of a button. Digital modeling amplifiers are getting better all the time and can cover all types of music.
My favorite modeling amplifier is the Fender Cyber-Twin SE amplifier. It’s not really a true modeling amplifier because it has switchable analog circuits instead of computerized models. It is a hybrid of digital effects and a classic tube amplifier.
No matter what music type you play there will be an amplifier that’s best suited for you. If you’re playing Jazz, Blues or Rock-N-Roll then go with a tube amp. If you’re playing Country or modern Heavy Metal, then stick with Solid State. If you will be playing a lot of different styles of music then your best bet will be a digital modeling amplifier.
